The Roche subsidiary has just announced that the restructuring of its early development group, which was confirmed a month ago, was part of a 103-person cut in staff.
The South San Francisco-headquartered business already admitted back in June that its vice presidents Vishva Dixit, Man-Wah Tan, and Todd McDevitt were among the casualties of the latest round of layoffs. Genentech didn’t disclose at the time how many other jobs would be impacted.
Now, Genentech says it will be eliminating “103 positions across several areas,” including the changes at Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) group, “as well as in other parts of the organization.”

The 103 job cuts are the latest in a series of restructuring cuts at Genentech, which last year fired at least 489 workers, including some who received pink slips as part of a global manufacturing restructuring by the Switzerland-based Roche group. In April last year (2024), Roche reduced the workforce by 3%, impacting 436 people on Genentech’s payroll.
Genentech confirmed the latest job cuts as it agreed to pay $25 million to Otsuka Pharmaceutical’s subsidiary Astex Pharmaceuticals as part of an agreement to find new drugs for breast cancer.
Astex has had several partnerships with Big Pharma, including with Merck & Co., AstraZeneca and Janssen, who were among the first to partner with Astex for its fragment-based drug discovery platform in the mid-2000s and since went on to develop the blockbuster breast cancer drug Kisqali.
In today’s deal, Cambridge, U.K.-based Astex will be entitled to up to $490 million in milestone payments from Genentech, which also will pay Astex tiered royalties based on net sales of medicines developed from the assets.
The newly announced collaboration is expected to focus on accelerating the development of innovative therapies for breast cancer by combining complementary scientific expertise and research capabilities. Strategic partnerships like this enable biotechnology companies to share resources, reduce development risks, and speed the transition of promising discoveries from laboratory research into clinical trials.
