Generative AI leader Insilico Medicine has added another major pharmaceutical collaboration to its growing list of partnerships, this time joining forces with contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) Bora Pharmaceuticals.
The agreement, which carries a potential value of up to $2.5 billion, adds to a series of drug discovery partnerships Insilico has secured in recent months. Since the start of the year, the Massachusetts-based biotech has expanded or launched collaborations with companies including SK Biosciences, Takeda, Eli Lilly, and Servier.
Covering multiple drug targets, the partnership will combine Insilico’s exclusive Pharma.AI platform with Bora’s expertise in drug development, manufacturing, and commercialization. Together, the companies aim to establish a next-generation approach to pharmaceutical innovation.
Pharma.AI supports the entire early-stage discovery process, from identifying therapeutic targets to generative chemistry and molecule optimization. By integrating those capabilities with Bora’s automation-focused manufacturing operations, the partners plan to accelerate the design of novel drug candidates for diseases that continue to have significant unmet medical needs.
Bora, which is headquartered in Taipei, also expects the collaboration to strengthen AI capabilities throughout the organization, with the technology supporting improvements in manufacturing, supply chain management, distribution, and broader corporate operations.
Bora Chief Executive Officer Bobby Sheng described the collaboration as a significant milestone in the company’s evolution from a pharmaceutical development and manufacturing partner into a broader drug innovation organization. He added that combining discovery, development, and commercialization within a single integrated framework presents an opportunity to streamline the entire drug development process.
According to Sheng, while artificial intelligence has already reshaped drug discovery, its greatest impact will come when those advances extend across the full development and manufacturing value chain.
Insilico said its AI platform typically identifies a preclinical candidate (PCC) within 12 to 18 months, compared with the industry norm of approximately 2.5 to four years. The company has put forward 31 preclinical candidates (PCCs) since 2021, with 13 securing Investigational New Drug (IND) clearance or approval.
Insilico founder and Chief Executive Officer Alex Zhavoronkov said the collaboration represents another important step toward demonstrating that AI-discovered medicines can be developed more rapidly, more efficiently, and at greater scale.
Eli Lilly was among the earliest pharmaceutical companies to partner with Insilico, first signing an AI software licensing agreement in 2023 before expanding the relationship with a separate $100 million deal nine months ago. Earlier this year, the companies strengthened the partnership again through a $115 million agreement that could ultimately reach $2.75 billion after milestone payments.
Insilico has continued to build momentum through additional partnerships. Two weeks ago, it entered into a collaboration with Takeda that included $60 million upfront and as much as $600 million in milestone payments. In June, SK Biosciences also signed an agreement with the biotech, paying $18 million upfront in a deal that could eventually be worth up to $2.5 billion.
Bora has likewise been actively expanding its business through acquisitions. In 2024, the company strengthened its U.S. presence by acquiring Minnesota-based generic drug manufacturer Upsher-Smith for $210 million.
